For a new user in an onboarding flow, the emotional state is typically some combination of unfamiliarity, mild anxiety, and a desire for reassurance. As they progress and understand more, anxiety tends to drop and curiosity tends to rise. The content that belongs at each stage is the content that meets that specific emotional state.

Confidence as a Design Variable

Confidence is the variable worth tracking across the whole journey. Each step a user completes successfully adds a small amount of it. Each piece of information they do not understand removes some. We worked on a genetics wellness product where the disclosure sequence was one of the central design problems. The product presented users with results drawn from genetic data, which is inherently complex, often counter-intuitive, and for most users, genuinely unfamiliar territory. The science team, understandably, wanted users to see the data. They had produced something rigorous and they wanted the rigour to be visible.

The instinct to lead with the science is one we see consistently in health and wellness products. Stakeholders who understand the science assume that showing it will build trust. What our user testing on this product revealed was the opposite. When we went too science-heavy in the early stages of the experience, we did not increase credibility. We lost it. Users felt they could not trust a product they did not understand, and a page of genetic markers with minimal framing read, to an unfamiliar user, as overwhelming and slightly alarming.

Showing science before users have a foothold does not build trust, it creates distance.

The fix was a sequencing change, not a content change. We restructured the flow so that users arrived at key takeaways first, written in plain language connected to their own body. The science was still there, but it arrived after users had understood what their results meant at a human level. Once they had that understanding, the science backed it up rather than replacing it, and credibility increased because the detail confirmed something the user already felt they grasped. The science team's content was preserved entirely. Only the order changed.

Lead With the Takeaway, Not the Data

One of the clearest principles we carry from the genetics product, and from the broader wellness work, is that users need a takeaway before they need data. This sounds obvious when stated directly, but most product flows invert it. The data is presented, and the user is expected to derive a takeaway from it. That works if the user already understands the domain. It does not work if they are encountering the subject for the first time while managing some level of anxiety about what they are about to learn.

The takeaway is the emotional anchor. It is the thing the user holds while everything else is introduced around it. On the genetics wellness product, that meant surfacing something like "your results suggest your body processes X more slowly than average" before presenting the underlying markers. The user has a sentence they can understand. Everything that follows can hang off that sentence.

Language as a Disclosure Tool

How the takeaway is phrased matters as much as its position in the sequence. We deliberately wrote takeaways in terms of the user's body and daily experience rather than clinical terminology. A result connected to something the user can picture, like sleep quality or energy levels, lands in a way that a reference code or a numerical score does not. The language is doing disclosure work, not just the structure.

When writing a first-level takeaway, test it against someone with no background in the domain. If they can tell you what it means for them personally within ten seconds, the phrasing is ready. If they ask what the term means, rewrite before you touch the sequencing.

Once the takeaway is established and understood, the layers below it can carry real complexity. The user has a reason to read further, and they have a mental model to attach the detail to.

Layering Science In as Anxiety Drops

The layering approach we used on the genetics wellness product followed a clear structure across three levels. The first level was plain-language takeaways connected to the user's body. The second level brought in supporting information, still accessible, but beginning to introduce the mechanisms behind the results. The third level contained the full scientific detail for users who wanted to go deeper.

The key is that access to deeper levels is earned by the user's own progression through the experience, not by their ability to cope with whatever appears on the screen. By the time a user reaches the science-heavy content at the third level, they have already built enough understanding that the terminology has a context. The same words that would have felt alienating at step one feel like confirmation at step three.

Letting Curiosity Drive Depth

Progressive layering also respects the fact that not all users want the same depth. Some will read the takeaway and feel satisfied. Others will want to understand every marker. A disclosure structure that forces everyone through the same depth serves neither group particularly well. The layered approach lets curiosity drive how far a user goes, which means engaged users go further and less engaged users do not feel they have missed something by stopping earlier.

On the wellness product, this translated to a clear visual signal at each level that more detail was available, without making that detail feel mandatory. The invitation was there. The pressure was not.

Structure each level of disclosure so that stopping at that level feels like a complete experience, not a truncated one. If a user at level one feels like they have missed something, the level is not self-contained enough and you will push them into content they are not ready for.

Pre-Framing Variation Before Users Encounter It

One of the most effective disclosure strategies we applied on the genetics wellness product was not about what information appeared, but about what appeared before the information. Genetic results often include variation that can seem unexpected or even wrong to a user who has a specific expectation of what their results should say. Without preparation, a user encountering an outlier result will frequently interpret it as an error, which breaks trust entirely.

Rather than designing better error states for when this happened, we rewrote the copy that appeared before those results to pre-emptively contextualise the variation. Phrases like "everyone's results reflect something unique about their body" and "it is common to see differences here across individuals" appeared before the potentially surprising data, framing it as normal before the user had a chance to interpret it as abnormal.

The effect was that the error state, as a psychological event, largely stopped occurring. Users who had been pre-framed read their results as variation rather than as mistakes. The trust problem disappeared without any change to the underlying results or the error handling in the product logic. We ran a test on a health and wellbeing product involving a multi-step onboarding flow. One version showed users a progress bar from the first step but gave them no information before they started about what the process would involve or how long it would take. A second version primed users upfront with a clear indication of what to expect before they entered the flow.

The results were stark. Without priming, drop-off was concentrated in the first three or four questions. Users had no frame for how far through the process they were, which made stopping feel as reasonable as continuing. After introducing upfront priming, completion rates rose from around 80-85% drop-off to approximately 95% completion. The change was entirely in what happened before the flow started, not inside it.

This tells us something worth carrying into any lengthy interaction: the expectation set before a process begins shapes how the user experiences every step within it. Progress Feedback That Matches Emotional Pace, Not Step Count

Standard progress bars measure steps completed. A ten-step flow shows 10% after the first step, 20% after the second, and so on. The math is clean but the emotional experience is poor, because early steps tend to feel effortful and a bar that barely moves after genuine effort is demoralising.

On a health and wellbeing product we worked on, we replaced a single linear progress bar with a segmented bar that showed progress within each section of the onboarding flow. The total number of steps was identical. What changed was that users could see their progress within a subsection, which meant the bar moved visibly and frequently. Completing a section felt like an achievement, and the question of how much further remained was easier to answer because it was bounded by the current section rather than by the entire process.

Not all disclosure decisions are about anxiety reduction. Sometimes the question is purely about what matters most. We worked on a baby monitor product where the disclosure logic was built around criticality rather than emotional readiness, because the parents using the product were not primarily anxious about the interface. They were focused and time-pressured, and they needed the information that actually mattered for their child's safety to surface immediately.

In that context, layering by complexity would have been the wrong approach. A parent who needs to know that their child's breathing has changed does not need to work through a series of increasingly detailed data points to reach that information. In practice, a screen that requires the user to interpret a large volume of data they do not yet understand reads as complexity they cannot manage, and complexity they cannot manage reads as something to be suspicious of.

This was precisely what we found on the genetics wellness product. The science-heavy early screens that the team expected to convey rigour were instead conveying inaccessibility. The redesigned flow, which surfaced significantly less information at the first level, was rated as more trustworthy, because users could understand what they were seeing and confidence in what you understand is the foundation of trust.

The relationship between simplicity and credibility is not universal. In some contexts, visible complexity is a credibility signal, a financial platform showing detailed data to a sophisticated investor is a different case. But for users who are new to a domain, emotionally activated, or unfamiliar with the terminology, the cognitive load of too much information actively erodes the trust you are trying to build.

Restraint as a Design Decision

Choosing what to withhold, temporarily, is as much a design decision as choosing what to show. The discipline is in resisting the pressure to surface everything at once, particularly when stakeholders equate visibility with value. What users cannot understand, they cannot trust, and trust is built by giving people something they can successfully make sense of before asking them to go further.

Practical Sequencing: Building Your Own Emotional Disclosure Map

Building an emotional disclosure map starts with identifying the emotional state at each stage of the user journey, before thinking about what content belongs there. The questions to answer, stage by stage, are what a user is feeling, what they need to feel confident enough to continue, and what would raise rather than reduce anxiety if introduced at this point.

Once those questions are answered for each stage, the information inventory can be sorted against them. Each piece of content gets assigned to the earliest stage at which the user is emotionally ready to receive it. Content that belongs at a later stage stays there, regardless of where it sits in the information architecture.

Building the Map in Practice

  1. List every piece of information the user will need across the full journey.
  2. Mark each item as plain-language or technical, and as reassuring or potentially alarming.
  3. Map the user's likely emotional state at each stage of the journey, from initial contact through to confident ongoing use.
  4. Assign each content item to the earliest stage at which the emotional state supports it.

Most concierge and building management apps illustrate the gap clearly. The standard approach is to hand a new resident a full directory of information from day one. The problem is that someone who has just moved home is managing a lot of cognitive and emotional load, and a full directory is not what they need. What they need is the single most relevant piece of information for that specific day. The rest can follow as their situation settles and their emotional state normalises. Treating the timing and sequencing of information as an emotional design problem, rather than an information architecture one, is the whole shift.
